Outline of Research at the Start |
To obtain geologically meaningful information from the Earth’s material, it is necessary to identify and analyze geochemically undisturbed domains. Zircon is a widely used mineral for U-Pb age of the magmatic or metamorphic events. Sometimes, the results are affected by secondary processes. We plan to investigate zircon internal structures via EBSD for undeformed domains to obtain geologically meaningful results.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Research plans for the proposed project have been mainly achieved with some delay due to the COVID-19 outbreak and its effects. Rocks samples collected during geological field surveys were investigated according to the plan. Petrographic and textural details, mineral chemistry, and zircon single-grain EBSD analysis were conducted on potential samples. Then the deformed and undeformed domains within the zircon grains were analyzed, using the Nano-SIMS, for U-Pb isotope ratios and age dating. The results have been already presented at International conference, followed by publishing articles in international scientific journals. In addition, some of the research results are summarized, written as manuscript, and have been submitted to scientific journals which are currently under review.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Although, the COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions caused some delays in conducting the field and experimental works according to original plan. However, with limited traveling opportunities and ease in analysis last year, significant progress has been achieved. Further work on the proposed project is underway from which fruitful results are expected in the near future. Data processing and manuscript preparations are in progress. In-situ EBSD analysis on additional samples have been done but isotopic work is still remaining that can be done during the current fiscal year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
It is planned that Nano-Scale U-Pb and/or Pb-Pb isotope analyses on different domains within single zircon grains will be conducted during the current and last year of the the project. In addition, data already obtained in last year will be processed, illustrated, summarized, and the outcomes will be presented at international scientific conference and then published in scientific journals. Manuscripts on other works that are currently underway will also be prepared and published in scientific journals.
