Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
In this study, we performed genetic analyses using Drosophila, with a focus on two molecules. One is yata, which regulates the intracellular trafficking of the Alzheimer's disease-causing protein, APP. The other gene is VCP, which is one of the causative genes of frontotemporal lobar degeneration. Our data revealed that yata regulates the assembly of COPI-coated transport vesicles, the formation of lipid droplets in fat cells, and the insulin/mTOR signals that govern metabolism, growth and longevity. Our data also revealed that missense variants of the VCP gene cause neurodegeneration via loss of the physiological functions of VCP.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
