Outline of Research at the Start

東南アジアでは、感染症に対して、伝承されている薬が現在でも利用されている。しかしながら、東南アジア伝統薬の感染症に対する科学的な有効性はほとんど検証されていない。申請者は、既に強い抗ウイルス活性を示す数種の東南アジア産薬用植物を見出している。そこで、伝統医学に使われる薬用植物の効果・効能の科学的エビデンスを立証することを目的に、抗ウイルス活性の評価、有効成分の特定、作用メカニズムを解明する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Bioactivity studies have been conducted to test the effects of medicinal plants used in Southeast Asian traditional medicine. Anti-influenza activity screening was performed on 38 Indonesian medicinal plant extracts to establish the scientific basis for the efficacy of Southeast Asian medicinal plants. As a result, three medicinal plant extracts including Isotoma longiflora showed strong anti-influenza activity. A new cytotoxic diterpenoid was isolated from Boesenbergia rotunda.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

今日でも東南アジアをはじめ世界各地では伝統医学が治療に用いられている。近年、様々な伝統医学が世界保健機構の認定を受けて、西洋医学の代替医療として注目されている。伝統医学はその地域に根ざした文化・生活・習慣を背景に現在でも伝承されている地域遺産であり、今後も継承し続ける必要がある。しかしながら、治療効果の科学的なエビデンスは欠如しており、経験に基づいた治療が行われているのが現状である。このことから科学的エビデンスに基づいた伝統医学への転換するためにも本研究を遂行する意味がある。
