Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
With the expansion of human space activities, the importance of food as a foundation for life in space is increasing. In this study, we performed light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and comprehensive gene expression analysis using gastric corpus tissues obtained from mice housed in space. We investigated changes in the localization and ultrastructure of gastric cells that support digestive function under microgravity conditions. Our findings indicate that microgravity in the space environment induces gene expression changes in the stomach, altering the spatial distribution of parietal cells and the morphology of their secretory canaliculi. Furthermore, the results suggest that sustained artificial gravity may help maintain gastric digestive function during long-duration spaceflight, similarly to conditions on Earth.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
