Outline of Research at the Start |
This research project explores Christian-Muslim Relations in Japan and China from 1549-1912. It seeks to investigate and analyze texts written by Christians and Muslims about their interactions with each other within the Chinese and Japanese contexts.
The project will try to answer two principle questions:
1. How did Christians and Muslims interact historically in China and Japan between 1549 and 1912? 2. How did Christians in Japan and China describe Muslims and their interactions with Muslims in the texts that they composed?
|
Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The project resulted in the publication of two peer-reviewed papers, two blog posts, and five presentations at international academic conferences. In addition to this, the project allowed work on a larger monograph to begin. I will continue to work on said monograph for future publication. Finally, the project has resulted in the creation of a course for undergraduate students being taught at Waseda Univeristy.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
The achievements have helped to disseminate information about Christian-Muslim relations in China and Japan prior to 1914, broadened understandings of the role of interfaith dialogue in the work of Meiji period Christian thinkers, and contributed to debates on the early history of Islam in Japan.
