Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、近世・近代移行期に大阪の漢学塾・泊園書院に学んだ人々を取上げる。彼らは尊攘運動家・都市名望家・農村名望家・漢文科教師・医療従事者として地域社会で活躍した人物が多く、その意識と行動には特有のものがあった。なぜ彼らは一つの現象とも捉えられる高い能動性を発揮しえたのだろうか。それは、彼らが同書院での学びを通して東アジアの儒学・漢学教養人特有の精神、すなわち「修己治人」を体得したからだと考えられる。考察では、先述した五つに分類した同書院出身〈実務家〉の意識と行動を地方ないしは地域ごとに明らかにする。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this research, I examined the relationship between Chinese studies in Osaka and the regional societies through a comprehensive survey of the achievements of those who graduated from Hakuen Shoin. As a result, it became clear that they played an active role in the region as businessmen, wealthy people, politicians, bureaucrats, educators, researchers, artists, writers, Buddhist monks, religious people, doctors, newspapermen, journalists, lawyers, judges, social entrepreneurs, philanthropists, engineers, authors, novelists, social activists, and martial artists.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまでの漢学塾研究は、塾そのものの制度や塾主の思想を分析することが主流であった。しかし本研究では、塾に学んだ学生の事績を網羅的に調査し、その過程で作成した略伝は七百以上にのぼる。この膨大なデータは、漢学を学んだ人々がその叡智を自らの行動に反映させていたのか否か、もし反映させていたとしたらそれは漢学のどの部分であったのか、といった問題にせまる一つの重要な素材になると思われる。
