Outline of Research at the Start |
This study will investigate the potential of intercultural competence tasks in monocultural foreign language classrooms to foster graduates capable of thriving in a global environment. The research will involve 200-250 students monitored over a one-year period. The tasks and approaches researched will include a) the use of specific textbook-based activities and reflective journals; b) peer interactions, including presentations and discussion projects; and c)instructor interventions. Feedback will also be collected from students on the effectiveness of each approach and levels of satisfaction.

Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study looked at whether Japanese university students could develop intercultural competence in monocultural EFL classrooms in domestic campuses. Results from a one-year longitudinal study with 205 university students suggest that students can become more curious, open to, and respectful of other cultures without going abroad. Results also indicate that incorporating cultural discussions and projects in EFL classrooms increased students' cultural self-awareness as well their awareness of global issues.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
Universities have relied on study abroad programmes to expose students to other cultures and to develop a sense of global awareness. This study suggests that intercultural and global competence can be developed in domestic campuses with mininum contact with people from other cultures.
