Outline of Research at the Start

his project explains when and how economic inequality affects political outcomes by developing a theory of inequality judgment. Using original survey, experimental, and interview data from France, Japan, Korea, and the United States, it elucidates how the public defines and perceives income inequality and identifies the mechanisms through which the sense of injustice and perceived inequality influence redistribution, voting behavior, democratic discontent. The project provides important policy insights about when and how people react to economic inequality politically.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

My research achievements in the AY2021 are in two parts: First, I made a significant progress in my book project, "Judging Inequality." I completed the revision of the theory, and I am currently finalizing the survey questionnaire and experimental designs for the additional analyses. I also conducted numerous (online) interviews for the project.

Second, I finished writing a preliminary draft of a new paper, "How the East and West Judge Inequality," which is also part of the larger research project.

I presented these research at various venues, including the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies and the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of Michigan, the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University, and the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

The COVID-19 pandemic is causing a delay in the research project as I could not travel abroad for field research with tight border restrictions and quarantine measures in various countries due to the surge of the Omicron variant. The person who was in charge of implementing my surveys and experiments at a survey research company was infected with the COVID-19 which caused an unexpected delay. However, I plan to complete the surveys and experiments in a couple of months which should put the project progress close to the original plan.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Data collection including the online surveys, experiments, and interviews will be completed by June, 2022. I plan to finish analyzing these data by the end of the summer. I will finalize the revisions of the book manuscript and submit the manuscript at a university press by the end of 2022.
