Outline of Research at the Start |
The purpose of this research project is to explore the significance of practicing participatory filmmaking as a pedagogy for advancing active learning and global competence in the university classroom in Japan. I will produce a film in collaboration with university students in Kumamoto. The created film will be screened in Japan and overseas. Through interviews, surveys, participant observation, and document analysis both in and outside Japan, this study aims to not only propose a model of participatory filmmaking as an alternative pedagogy but also delineate its possibilities.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This study looks into the significance of practicing participatory filmmaking as a pedagogy for advancing active learning and global competence in the university classroom. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the data collection plan, which was originally developed in the first year of this project, had to be altered. Instead of carrying out fieldwork abroad, I attended international conferences online to present the findings based on the filmmaking project conducted in the previous year. After the travel restrictions were eased, I was able to fly to the United Kingdom in September 2022. I presented a paper introducing the practice of participatory filmmaking at the annual conference of the British Educational Research Association in Liverpool, and it was well accepted by the audience. In addition, the continuous collaboration with students in Kumamoto resulted in the production of a short film in January 2023.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In FY 2022, based on the research insight gained since the first year of this study, I started a new participatory filmmaking project in Kumamoto, and a short film was produced in January 2023. Moreover, the COVID-19 travel restrictions were lightened, so I was able to fly to the United Kingdom and participated in an in-person conference in September 2022. There I explained the practice of participatory filmmaking as a paper presenter.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In FY2023, I will attend international conferences to present research findings and exchange ideas with educational practitioners in person. The latest film produced in 2023 is scheduled to be screened in the United Kingdom in September 2023, and I will obtain feedback from the audience at that time. I will also review the collaborative projects implemented since the first year of this research and develop the practice of participatory filmmaking.
