Outline of Research at the Start |

Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Mandibular anomalies are one of common congenital defects, suggesting that mandibles are vulnerable to perturbations in their development. Understanding molecular level of mandibular development is essential for knowing how mandibular anomalies occur. Meckel's cartilage is formed prior to the mandibular formation. Therefore, it is crucial to elucidate the mechanism of Meckel's cartilage formation for understanding the detail of mandibular development. In normal mandibular development, Hh signaling in the lingual part of mandibular process was found to inhibit cartilage formation. Defect of these Hh signals induced extra Meckel’s cartilage formation.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
