ストリートは井戸端会議に見られる様に、従来、人が停留でき、密接に交わる、社会的に重要な場所であり、貧困層にとっては生活資源の１つだった。やがてそれは消費のための空間か、移動のための空間に意味を切り詰められたが、ストリートがどのような空間であるかは、人々、特に貧困層にとっていまだに重要である。しかしどのような仕方でそうした豊かな空間が可能になっているのかは十分に明らかにされていない。そこで本研究はネパールのストリートとその場所をめぐる社会運動を事例に、貧困層の共同性と停留を許すストリートのあり方を人類学的に分析し、ストリートが貧困層や人間社会にとってもつ意味の認識を深めることを目的にしている。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aims to describe and analyze the formation of streets as contested spaces in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, not only through the social practices of the urban poor such as street vendors, but also by incorporating the agency of material objects from the perspective of Actor-Network Theory. Specifically, it focuses on traditional objects placed in the street, examining how these objects participate in and contribute to the street’s reality as a site of contestation.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
ストリート空間についてはブラウンらの抗争空間論など、公共空間としてのストリートの使用やその実践を深く記述するものはみられるがその際、ストリート空間は人々の実践の背景や舞台に退く。一方でインフラ研究と呼ばれる研究群ではインフラが人々の実践や権力、階級に与える影響を分析できるが、逆に物質決定論的になってしまう。その点、モノのエージェンシーという視点を挿入することは、この両立場を架橋する可能性がある。
