Outline of Research at the Start |
The outline of the research consists of three key points:
1) Optimization of the gold nanostructures on the QCM sensor surface to perform both optical and microgravimetric sensing. 2) Quantification of prostate cancer biomarkers by antibody-based biosensors. 3) Capturing the presence of the target molecules in real biological samples.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I was able to develop an opto-microfluidic sensing platform to detect specific biomarkers in human plasma. The ongoing global pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 motivated us to use this device to detect first COVID-19 related proteins such as anti-SARS-CoV-2 S antibodies (DOI: 10.1016/j.bios.2020.112578).
This device has been further developed to achieve the detection of multiple biomarkers in the same sample using a single integrated device, and is the subject of a recently submitted pubblication about COVID-19 reasarch and of a next paper on prostate cancer biomarkers detection in human plasma. Specifically, this biosensor allows to detect prostate specific antigen, matrix metalloproteinase-2 and anti-alpha-methylacyl-CoA in real sample with high sensitivity (LOD < 0.5 ng/mL) in less than 30 min.
