Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
This study demonstrated that the practice of hostage-taking has persisted from the medieval to the modern and contemporary periods by undergoing functional transformations. It developed a new analytical framework that emphasizes this historical continuity. By examining the changing legal status of hostages under international law, the rise and decline of hostage practices in East Asia, and the multifaceted functions of hostages through psychological theory and experimental methods, the study revealed the complex roles hostages have played. These findings were compiled into academic papers, published, and presented at scholarly conferences. Furthermore, by applying the framework to contemporary cases such as the recent Gaza conflict, the study suggests that hostages can serve as a catalyst for dialogue and constraint even in highly adversarial relationships.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
