| Outline of Research at the Start |
現代の経済活動の中心は都市であり、都市内の経済構造は、都市住人にとっての利便性、企業の生産性などを通じて、都市および国内全体の経済発展および厚生に影響する。しかし、既存の政府統計等のデータソースで把握できる都市内構造についての情報は限定的であり、特に、歴史的情報を把握することはほぼ不可能であった。 本研究課題では、古地図やGoogle Street View、および衛星画像などの画像データ、および機械学習による画像解析技術によって、都市内構造、およびその発展の理解の刷新をめざす。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this project is to renew our understanding of urban structures and development by using image data such as historical maps, Google Street View, and satellite images, as well as image analysis technology based on machine learning, which has been rapidly developing in recent years, to understand urban characteristics that are difficult to grasp using existing government statistics. First, using data on the location of daimyo's estates in Edo obtained from digitized historical maps, we estimate their impact on the current economic activities in Tokyo. Second, building heights captured by satellite imagery data is also used to analyze the impact of land use regulations on land prices.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究課題では、衛星画像や歴史的地図の電子化によって得られた画像データによって、伝統的なデータでは答えることができない問いに回答を与えられるという可能性について示すことができた。本研究課題では、衛星画像や古地図の電子化データによって、現実の都市政策、特に土地利用政策に対して実証的知見を当たることができた。本研究課題で推進したいずれの研究も、政策的にも重要な問いを対象としたものであり、学術的のみならず社会的にも大きな意義を持つ研究成果である。
