W.V.O.クワイン以降の「自然主義」が真っ先に思い浮かぶ。だが、自然主義は科学哲学の専売特許ではないし、クワイン的自然主義にも前史がある。J.デューイの自然主義である。当時の雑誌で「自然主義的ヒューマニズム」が標語化したことから、自然主義はクワイン以前の米国哲学を知る上でも重要であることが窺える。
本研究は、超越主義を「ロマン主義の一形態としての自然主義」とみなし、それが、しばしば自然主義と結び付けられる決定論的世界観に抗して、経験の言語化しきれない側面を強調したこと、その視点がデューイの「自然主義」に引き継がれたことを示す。その作業によって、クワイン以前の自然主義の系譜を描く。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study has focused on the genealogy of the Naturalism in American culture, especially literature, philosophy, and sociology in the 19th and 20th US. There are two main outcomes: The relocation of the relation of John Muir and R. W. Emerson in American intellectual history; the revelation of the fact that the American sociology has inherited John Dewey's naturalistic empiricism.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
哲学や文学、社会学などの学問分野の分割に沿って学び、研究を進めている。そうした分野ごとに参照される固有名詞・概念・人名・手法が無意識に限定されるのも事実だ。しかし、そうした分野ごとの相対的自律性は、過去の知識人たちが生きていた頃は必ずしも自明ではなかった。本研究は、アメリカを代表する哲学者ジョン・デューイの「自然主義」という言葉と発想に影響される形で、アメリカの知的風景を「自然主義」の観点から再編成することを試みたものであり、必ずしも方法論や対象を共有していない面々が、関心や関わり方、目標を共有していたことを既存の学問地図とは異なる形で示そうとした点に、一つの社会的な意義があると思われる。
