| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、気候と経済の関係について、経済学的な視点からのアプローチにより自然災害が経済活動に与える影響について明らかにする。気候変動が深刻化するなか、近年、その影響や被害は、農業など一部の産業や地域だけでなく社会経済の様々な側面に顕在化していることが報告されている。そこで本研究では、特に貿易に焦点を当て、自然災害が国際貿易に与える影響について定量的な分析を用いて検討することにより、気候変動の経済的影響に関する新たな側面を明らかにすることを試みる。さらに、災害被害を受ける国や産業の特徴にも着目し、気候変動影響のメカニズム解明に寄与することを目指す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study empirically analyzes the impact of natural disasters on international trade. Our results show a negative and statistically significant effect of natural disasters on bilateral trade flows. We find that natural disasters in both exporting and importing countries have an immediate and persistent impact. Our results also suggest that a country’s vulnerability to climate change has a negative effect and adaptation readiness has a positive effect on trade flows.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、貿易における自然災害の被害を明らかにしている。気候変動の経済的影響として貿易を扱った研究は未だ数が少ないが、本研究では先行研究ではみられない月次の二国間データを用いてより精緻な分析をおこない、自然災害が貿易に与える被害の大きさを定量的に示している点に意義がある。また、本研究の結果は、気候変動への適応努力が災害による経済被害を軽減するために重要であることを示唆しており、経済発展との両立を視野に入れた気候変動対策を考える上でも意義のある研究結果であると言える。
