Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
The aim of this study is to establish an antimicrobial sonodynamic therapy (SDT) for periodontal treatment using an ultrasonic scaler and gold nanoclusters. Current periodontal therapies rely mainly on mechanical removal of calculus and biofilm, with limited bactericidal effects. SDT enables simultaneous mechanical disruption and bacterial killing, offering potentially greater therapeutic efficacy. In preliminary experiments, microbubble generation by a dental ultrasonic scaler was confirmed, suggesting the potential for efficient singlet oxygen production and antimicrobial activity at higher frequencies. However, while gold nanoclusters showed some antimicrobial effect when combined with ultrasound, the expected results were not fully achieved. Future efforts will focus on enhancing singlet oxygen generation through the use of metal cluster-dye complexes and improving biofilm penetration via nanogel formulation.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
