Outline of Research at the Start

η′ 中間子が炭素原子核に束縛した状態の発見・分光をめざす。この未知の状態を発見・詳しく研究することで、異常に大きい η′ 中間子質量の起源を解明し、汎く物質質量の起源解明に寄与する。実験はドイツ重イオン研究所のシンクロトロンで加速した陽子ビームを炭素標的に照射し、炭素に束縛した η′ 中間子を生成・分光することで行う。η′ 中間子束縛後の崩壊で放出される陽子をコインシデンス計測することで従来と比べてスペクトルのシグナル・バックグラウンド比を改善し、発見・分光可能性を大きく広げた計測を実施する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2022/2月にドイツ重イオン研究所(GSI)で実施した本研究の主要な目的であるS490実験では40テラバイトに及ぶデータを取得した。データを安全に管理する意味からもデータを複製して日独の二カ所で保管し、解析を進めている。また、2022年夏までに現地研究者と共同して、大型検出器のビームラインからの撤収作業を行った。
実験は前方スペクトロメータに組み合わせる形で、標的周囲の超伝導ソレノイド磁石による 1テスラ環境下にストローチューブ検出器、プラスチックシンチレータバレル検出器、CsI カロリーメータ、ファイバー検出器等を設置して行い、2.5 GeV陽子ビームによる12C(p,dp)反応による準排他的測定のデータを取得した。2023年5月時点までの解析の結果、取得したデータのうち有用なデータ量は実験前の見積もりに対して十分な量ある事がわかり、概ね計画通りであった。現在、物理的な意義のある情報を得るための解析を進めている。
解析に際しては現地研究者と緊密に協調している。2022年9月には、新型コロナ・オミクロン株の感染流行に伴い、共同解析のための渡航をキャンセルせざるを得ない場面もあったが、オンラインでの打ち合わせ等を実施することで、遅滞ない研究の進捗を図っている。これまでに前方スペクトロメータのデータ解析が完了し、標的周囲検出器での粒子識別、荷電粒子飛跡検出が進んでいる。解析の状況については、学会、国際会議等での発表によって、逐次状況を報告・公開している。
GSIとの共同研究で実施しているパイ中間子原子分光によるカイラル対称性の研究に関しては、最終結果となる論文を出版した。

Reason

コロナ禍により渡航がキャンセルになる場面もあったが、オンライン会議等で補完し、研究の進捗への影響はほぼない。航空運賃の高騰と円安による渡航費用の増大はじわじわと影響しているが、解析は全体として順調に進んでいる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

GSIに滞在して現地研究者と打ち合わせ・共同研究を行い、今年度中の論文投稿をめざした実験データの解析を行う。同時に、次期実験に向けた議論、準備を行う。
