Outline of Research at the Start

気候変動に適応し、土壌の炭素貯留機能を高める農法として、不耕起栽培が乾燥地を中心に普及しているが、湿潤アジア地域の火山灰土壌、水田土壌における効果は未解明である。その理由は、当該地域における気候や栽培作物、土壌タイプが特異的であること、ならびに土壌への長期的な炭素貯留効果を予測する土壌炭素動態モデルが転耕や埋没、湛水などのかく乱を伴う土壌には対応できていないことによる。
本研究では日本に加え米国、インドネシアを比較しつつ、①土壌の炭素蓄積速度を評価し、②有機物の分解速度に対する耕起の影響解析により、③異なる気候、栽培条件において作物収穫量と炭素貯留効果を最大化できる耕起様式を特定し提案する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

気候変動を緩和し肥沃度を高める土壌管理としての不耕起栽培法の有効性を検証するため、インドネシア、米国における土壌調査を実施した。インドネシアでは、ムラワルマン大学のSukartiningsih教授とともに不耕起栽培を含む異なる土地利用条件における植物リターの分解試験の結果を取りまとめ、国際共著論文として投稿した(査読中)。米国では、オレゴン州立大学のStephen Machado教授の案内のもと長期連用圃場を視察し、半乾燥地における不耕起栽培の炭素貯留効果が有効となる一方で、被覆植物の蒸散によって土壌水分が失われるトレードオフが働く地域が存在するという情報提供を受け、日本・インドネシアの事例との違いを明確化した。不耕起栽培の炭素貯留効果について世界中の報告値にばらつきがあることから、世界210報の論文データを収集・メタ解析を行い、国際共著論文の執筆を完了した。この中で、安定同位体比を用いてC3/C4植物由来有機物の分解速度と蓄積速度を分離し、分解速度・炭素蓄積速度それぞれの規定要因を解明することに成功した。この結果、不耕起栽培の炭素貯留効果が特に熱帯地域で有効となることを解明した。これは地域によって不耕起栽培の炭素貯留効果が異なることを示す重要な成果である。
これらの研究成果は、国際砂質土壌会議(2023/6/4-8)で4件の口頭発表及び「Sandy Soils」(Springer社、2023/11)の一部として公表された。また、国際NGOソリダリダードの国際セミナー「土壌の特質と持続可能な土壌管理のあり方:アブラヤシ栽培地を事例に」(2023/12/7)、BS日テレ『深層News』(2023/10/3)、「日伊フォーラム」(2024/1/19)など一般向けの研究成果の発信・普及も行った。

Reason

計画通り、本プロジェクトの成果を米国の国際砂質土壌会議で4件の口頭発表を行い、さらにインドネシア、米国の研究者とともにそれぞれ国際共著論文の執筆・投稿の段階まで進めることができた。加えて、国際NGOソリダリダードの依頼を受け、アブラヤシ栽培地の持続的な土壌管理に向けた国際セミナーを実施し、また、日伊経済連合会の招待を受け、両国の企業代表者を対象として実施されている「日伊フォーラム」で講演を行うなど、我が国のみならずマレーシア、インドネシア、イタリアの企業、NGOに対して不耕起栽培を含む持続的な土壌管理を指導・普及し、その重要性を周知させることができた点から想定以上の成果であると。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

水田土壌の炭素動態モデル改良に向けて、水田の土壌有機物の代謝回転速度に関する実験を日本・インドネシア(ムラワルマン大学、ボゴール農科大学)の共同研究として進める。すでに土壌採取、分析の大部分を終了しており、成果の取りまとめを加速する。研究成果は、イタリアで開催されるIUSS100周年記念大会(IUSS Centennial)および日本で開催される第9回土壌鉱物・有機物・微生物の相互作用に関する国際シンポジウム(ISMOM2024)において発表するとともに、インドネシア・米国の共同研究者と連携し、植物リターの分解速度、不耕起栽培の炭素貯留効果に関する論文の公表を行う。
また、本課題研究の今後のさらなる展開を目指して、現在の米国、インドネシアとの連携に加えて、欧州最大の水田農業の実績を有するイタリアとの連携を強化すべく、上記のイタリアにおける国際会議時に同国を代表する研究機関(トリノ大学、国立稲研究所、国立農業研究機構他)の視察ならびに研究者との議論を開始する予定である。
