Outline of Research at the Start

気候変動に適応し、土壌の炭素貯留機能を高める農法として、不耕起栽培が乾燥地を中心に普及しているが、湿潤アジア地域の火山灰土壌、水田土壌における効果は未解明である。その理由は、当該地域における気候や栽培作物、土壌タイプが特異的であること、ならびに土壌への長期的な炭素貯留効果を予測する土壌炭素動態モデルが転耕や埋没、湛水などのかく乱を伴う土壌には対応できていないことによる。
本研究では日本に加え米国、インドネシアを比較しつつ、①土壌の炭素蓄積速度を評価し、②有機物の分解速度に対する耕起の影響解析により、③異なる気候、栽培条件において作物収穫量と炭素貯留効果を最大化できる耕起様式を特定し提案する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

気候変動を緩和し肥沃度を高める土壌管理技術を解明するため、イタリアにおける土壌調査、現地研究者との情報交換を実施した。その上で、世界中の有機物分解速度データを収集し、土地利用条件(慣行農法、不耕起・アグロフォレストリー)の違いによる炭素貯留効果を異なる気候条件において比較・解析し、不耕起栽培によって土壌有機物分解速度の温度依存性が低下し、土壌への炭素貯留効果が高まることを解明した。これはアグロフォレストリーを含む森林を活かした土地利用法開発に大きく貢献するものである。
これらの成果を1)国際土壌科学連合IUSS100周年記念大会(於フィレンツェ・イタリア、2024年5月)、2)日本土壌微生物学会2024年度大会(於名古屋、2024年6月)、3)日本土壌肥料学会2024年度大会(於福岡、2024年9月)、4)第9回土壌鉱物・有機物・微生物の相互作用に関する国際シンポジウムISMOM2024(於つくば、2024年10月)、5)水田土壌国際シンポジウム(於南京・中国、2024年10月)で計10題の講演として発表した。とりわけ、2)ではその内容をシンポジウムペーパーとして出版し、4)では、会議の企画・運営にも積極的に貢献する一方で、上述の本研究の成果が高い評価を受け、新たな国際共同研究に発展しつつある。また、5)では、主催者であるIUSS水田土壌作業部会役員と協働して会議を企画するのみならず、本研究助成によりイタリアからの研究者招聘を実現したことにより、主催者よりその貢献を高く評価された。

Reason

計画通り、通常の国内に加え、当該研究分野における主要かつ重要な国際集会であるIUSS100周年記念大会(2024年5月)、第9回土壌鉱物・有機物・微生物の相互作用に関する国際シンポジウムISMOM2024(2024年10月)で研究成果を発表するとともに(3題)、イタリアにおける土壌調査、現地研究者との情報交換を実施し、さらに、IUSS水田土壌作業部会と協働して、新たにInternational Symposium on Paddy Soils -New Challenges in Paddy Soils Research-(2024年10月)を企画し、研究成果を発表をするのみならず(1題)、イタリアの関連研究者を招聘(1題)することに成功したという点を鑑み、想定以上の成果を上げることができたと評価できる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

水田土壌の炭素動態モデル改良に向けて、水田における土壌有機物の代謝回転速度に関する研究成果について学会発表を継続して行い、国内外の共同研究者とともに論文にまとめるとともに、改訂中の不耕起下における土壌有機炭素動態に関する論文を取りまとめ、再投稿する。また、今年度国内(福島県)で開催されるカーカム会議に協力し、研究成果を発表する。さらに、これまでの研究成果に基づき、当該研究課題に関する議論を世界的にリードするため、2026年の世界土壌科学会議(中国南京市)に向けてシンポジウムを企画・提案しており、イタリア・米国・インドネシア・タイなどの共同研究者と連携し、今後、内容の詳細を決定する。
