Outline of Research at the Start |

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
So far, health status of 500 pregnant women and 150 children have been compiled, and the data was compared with hydrochemical, physicochemical, and microbiological status of soil and water.
Areas of Belapu, Pejawara, and Belma in Mangaluru; Manjeshwara and Neeleshwara in Kasargod district have high iron content in water and above average levels of microbiological loadings in soil. Its relevance to pregnancy and child health status is being evaluated. 12 abnormal deliveries were recorded in these areas, however no significant changes were observed in child health.
Correlation between these environmental parameters and their impact on the health status of pregnant women and subsequent child birth and helath will be compiled, and data generated for publications.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Project is progressing smoothly, with perfect coordination between Nitte University hospital, the project lab Cellomic lab, and expertise and support from University of Miyazaki.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
As part of the project objective, continuous evaluation of child health is necessary. So far, this year, health status of 150 children has been completed. Survey samples of 200 more children is expected to be collected, and evaluated for biochemical analysis including hair sample analysis. Physical health check up also will be conducted. Child health parameters will be evaluated with the help of computer-aided intelligence programs and compared with geochemical and physicochemical status of the water and soil.
Nitte University is developing a comprehensive plan to overcome any long-term issue, with expertise advice from gynecologists and pediatricians, in coordination with experts from the University of Miyazaki.
