ベトナムにおける港市遺跡と沈没船遺跡の探査・発掘調査と保存研究の枠組みを深化・発展させ、東南アジア最古級の崑崙船の船体復元と海上シルクロード遺産としての評価進展を図るのが国際共同研究の柱である。ベトナムでの沈没船遺跡でのサルベージは、陶磁器の引き揚げに過度に偏向しており、劣化が進む貴重な船体考古資料の現状を目の前にしながらも、その重要性を明らかにする研究と成果発信の方策が取れない状況がある。国外の船舶考古学先進国を研究拠点として、船体復元の基礎的船舶考古学研究を実施、ベトナムに研究導入を図るの崑崙船造船技術も明らかにしていく。
