Outline of Research at the Start	海洋生態系では、多くの生物にとって生理学的に重要なドコサヘキサエン酸(DHA)などの多価不飽和脂肪酸(PUFA)は主に微細藻類などにより一次生産されている。魚類が保有するPUFAのほとんどは食物連鎖の過程で蓄積されたものであり、一次生産者のPUFA生産量が、生態系の維持に大きな影響を及ぼす。我々は、EPA・DHAに富み、多くの消費者にとって重要な餌生物であるカイアシ類の一種が、微細藻類と同様のPUFA生合成経路を保持し、PUFAの一次生産者として機能する可能性が高いことを突き止めた。本研究では、安定同位体標識と質量分析技術を駆使することで、カイアシ類のPUFA生産能を明らかにすることを目指す。
