Research Abstract |
I have investigated how the slavery abolition movement in mid-nineteenth century America influences Nathaniel Hawthorne' s literary world. In the research, first of all, I have made clear the limitations of The Scarlet Letter as a slave narrative by comparing it with Afro-American writer Toni Morrison' s Beloved. Secondly, I have considered how Hawthorne' s The Scarlet Letter influences Indian American writer Mukherjee' s The Holder of the World in terms of hybridity or miscegenation. Thirdly, I have showed how Hawthorne' s The Blithedale Romance reflects his opinion in regard to the anti-slavery movement in mid-nineteenth century America.
