Research Abstract |
This research elucidated the social and cultural aspects of banqueting practices in Renaissance England. It examined the impact of banqueting practices on cultural and social activities such as not only poetry and plays but also music, dance, hunting, and cooking. It concluded that the difficulty in understanding banqueting scenes in Shakespearean works and other English Renaissance literature originated from the complexity of a banqueting space in which the line between the public and the private is blurred. Finally it also explored emblematic aspects and postcolonial discourses in banqueting practices which served to constitute the identities of not only the aristocratic patrons but also the new middle-classes in early modern England.
