Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of life management strategies on well-being among older couples in Japan. The initial and 3-year follow-up surveys were conducted toward 1,500 older couples living in a suburban area of Tokyo. 498 couples' paired responses obtained from the initial survey were analyzed. The result showed that a flexible attitude toward accepting unavoidable negative life events was important for both husbands and wives among older couples in Japan. Even more striking were the crossover effects from husbands to wives, where we found that husbands' flexible attitudes toward accepting unavoidable negative life events or in adopting compensating strategies for losses associated with aging are important for the well-being of their wives.
