Research Abstract |
This study clarifies the following three points as characteristic of the history of music education practice in the wartime period The use of educational musical instruments was started in the 1930s by teachers of some Tokyo city primary schools. They had two purposes : to develop musical self-expression with school musical instruments and to build patriotic support for the war through music At the same time comprehensive auditory training was started by Kichigorou Sato in Sakai-shi, Osaka. It had two purposes : one was developing fundamental musical capability and the other was civil defense, i. e., to recognize the types of enemy aircraft and the sound of a submarine Practical use of the media-including magazines, SP records, and movies-became indispensable to the spread of these musical education practices
