Research Abstract |
Dense colloids or mixtures of granule-fluid often show a severe shear thickening, which is a cause of well-known strange behaviors shown by a starch-water mixture. We have constructed a phenomenological model of fluid dynamics for such a shear-thickening fluid. By analyzing the model equations, we have shown theoretically that the steady shear flow can be unstable to become an oscillatory flow, and demonstrated experimentally that such a oscillatory flow actually occurs.
