Research Abstract |
One of the devastating complications after thoracoabdominal aortic surgery is paraplegia. Paraplegia is thought to be a result of spinal cord ischemia during aortic occlusion. To protect against ischemic spinal cord injury, many drugs have been tested in animal experiments. However, no drugs have been established as being protective in the clinical setting. In this study, we found that the combination of erythropoietin and insulin-like growth factor 1 given just after reperfusion protects against ischemic spinal cord injury in a transient spinal cord ischemia model in rabbits.
