Research Abstract |
Expression of TrkB, a neurotrophin receptor, was increased in placentas of intrauterine growth restriction(IUGR), pregnancy induced hypertension(PIH) or small twins. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF), the ligand of TrkB, was higher in maternal plasma in PIH patients. BDNF/TrkB signaling had anti-apoptotic effects against oxidative stress in cultured villous tissue explants and a choriocarcinoma cell line, suggesting a protective role of BDNF/TrkB under unfavorable conditions in utero.
