Research Abstract |
Our research project reaches following three stages of suggestive conclusion.(1) establishment and refinement of a method of historical analysis of rune stones : the method tells us that the interrelationship between text of runes and context in which they were inscribed should be noticed to understand social function of rune stones(2) presentation of social function of rune stones by applying our new analytical method to the corpus : As an example the Jelling rune stone, which king Harald Bluetooth of Denmark had raised in memory of his parents in the middle of the 10^<th> century, functioned as part of a monument which was constructed to various types of onlookers coming to Jelling palace(3) creation of a new vision of earlier Middle Ages : our study of rune stones showed us that Scandinavia around the year 1000 was a political and cultural crossroad which was not open only to its surrounded kingdoms but also far-stretching Eurasian world including Russian, Islamic and Byzantine cultures.
