We found that MAG expressing specifically in nerve tissues associates with glycoprotein B (gB) of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and functions as a receptor for VZV during infection. VZV infection of MAG-expressing cells can be inhibited with anti-MAG antibody and with some smaller molecules than antibody. We also found that MAG is a receptor of herpes simplex virus (HSV) during infection of nerve tissues.
