Research Abstract |
This study examines how novice foreign language writers develop their writing competence and linguistic knowledge in a one-year genre-based writing course. To define genre approach, this study draws on systemic functional linguistic (SFL) theory that sees language as a resource for making meaning in a particular context of use. Analysis ofthe longitudinal data revealed that the novice writers made progress in their rhetorical awareness, and that changes in their awareness were apparent in their actual written products.
