Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
Problems in the signal communication between and within cells can cause heart and vascular diseases that are present from birth or that run in families. In this research project, we aimed to learn how certain cell signals affect formation of the heart and blood vessels. We mainly focused on the genes that are controlled downstream of these signals. We looked for genomic DNA regions that are used to turn these genes on or off, called "enhancers". We then studied upstream regulator proteins and abnormalities in the mice that lost these enhancers. We can also use the enhancers as a tool to express artificial genes in specific tissues of mouse embryos, which enabled us to understand more about the origin and diversity of cardiovascular cells. These results help clarify how the heart and blood vessels normally develop and what causes related diseases in humans.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
