Outline of Research at the Start

脳のシナプス機能の一部を模擬する不揮発デバイスを大量に局所相互結合させた「メモリスタの連続体」を学習により構造化すると、相互作用のないメモリアレイ構造や小規模回路では発現し得ない複雑現象・生体様現象が発現する。この生体様デバイスと現代の計算機科学(人工知能技術)が協働する脳型デバイスとしてのメモリスタのあるべき姿・構造はどのようなものか? この点が本研究課題の核心をなす学術的な問いである。本研究の目的は、生体様視点から独自に生み出された「メモリスタ連続体」の学理構築および人工知能技術との協働技術の構築であり、物性・材料・デバイス主導による新たな脳型デバイス研究の学理を創造するものである。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

In the brain, countless neurons form a hierarchical 3D local connectivity structure. We attempted to create high-dimensional wiring of conductive polymer micro-wires between multiple electrodes (3D memristers). By placing multiple electrodes in a liquid medium on a 2D plane and in 3D space, we established a technique to selectively wire micro-wires only between desired electrode pairs by controlling the applied polymerization voltage. This allowed us to dynamically form networks necessary for information processing, akin to axon guidance. Furthermore, after network formation, applying an external voltage to the electrodes induced changes in micro-wire conductivity due to gate effects. Nonlinear responses, including inhibitory resistance changes associated with voltage spikes and reservoir computing, were observed.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

脳内情報処理を計算機上でシミュレートする従来のAI研究のアプローチに対し,材料固有の物性を巧みに利用することで人工脳が物理的にエミュレートされた「マテリアル知能」の実現に関する試みが近年数多くなされている.本研究は、マイクロ電極ギャップ間への3次元的なポリマー細線の液中配線を用いた電極間抵抗制御によるシナプス機能模倣を行うものである.細線の配線本数や径,導電性といった物理化学的変化を外部電圧制御によって誘起し,長期増強及び短期可塑性といったシナプス機能を電極間抵抗変化により模倣し得ることを示した.これらの発見は,現代のAIハードウェアの限界を3Dメモリスタで打破できる可能性を示唆している。
