Outline of Research at the Start

数100兆電子ボルトの宇宙ガンマ線を作る親の宇宙線は数1000兆電子ボルトのエネルギーを持つとされ、その起源が銀河系内から系外に遷移すると考えられているエネルギー領域に相当する。
本研究は、2014 年からデータ収集を開始し世界で初めて100兆電子ボルトを超えるエネルギーのガンマ線を検出した、世界最大の地下水チェレンコフ型ミューオン観測装置を有する広視野宇宙線望遠鏡であるチベット空気シャワー観測装置を継続運用し、そのデータを使用することにより、100 TeV (100兆電子ボルト) を超える領域でのガンマ線天文学の確立を目指すものである。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

数 100 TeV 宇宙ガンマ線を作る親の原子核宇宙線はいわゆる Knee 領域である数 PeV のエネルギーを持つとされ、その起源が銀河系内から系外に遷移すると考えられているエネルギーに相当するため、100 TeV 超領域でのガンマ線観測は、宇宙線の起源・加速問題に大きな知見を与えるなど、物理学的・天文学的意義が極めて大きいと考えられている。 本研究の目的は、2014 年からデータ収集を開始し世界で初めて 100 TeV を超えるエネルギーのガンマ線を検出した、大面積 (3,200 平方メートル) 地下水チェレンコフ型ミューオン観測装置を有する広視野宇宙線望遠鏡であるチベット空気シャワー観測装置を継続運用し、そのデータを使用することにより、100 TeV 超領域ガンマ線天文学を確立することである。
空気シャワー観測において、その到来方向は各検出器がシャワー粒子を検出した時間差から求めるため、TDC (時間-デジタル変換器) は角度分解能を決める要となるパーツの一つである。チベット空気シャワー観測装置で現在使用している TDC は 1999 年に導入され、当時の電子部品の制約から時間分解能は 0.5 ns である。これを高い時間分解能を持つ最新の TDC と置き換えることで、角度分解能の改善、感度の向上を目指す。
今年度は、中国科学院国家天文台と協力し、チベット空気シャワー観測装置の TDC の置き換えを推進した。同時に、チベット空気シャワー観測装置で取得されているデータの解析やモンテカルロシミュレーション等を研究協力者とともに進めた。
また、南半球のボリビアで同様の観測を推進しているALPACA実験グループとの良好な協力関係を維持した。
研究の進捗状況と成果については、研究代表者および研究協力者が学術雑誌論文、各種国際会議、日本物理学会、日本天文学会などで発表した。

Reason

空気シャワー観測において、その到来方向は各検出器がシャワー粒子を検出した時間差から求めるため、TDC (時間-デジタル変換器) は角度分解能を決める要となるパーツの一つである。チベット空気シャワー観測装置で現在使用している TDC は 1999 年に導入され、当時の電子部品の制約から時間分解能は 0.5 ns である。これを高い時間分解能を持つ最新の TDC と置き換えることで、角度分解能の改善、感度の向上を目指した。
今年度は、中国科学院国家天文台と協力し、置き換えに必要な TDC、VME からデータを読み出すためのインターフェイスボード、データ収集用PC、部品、ケーブルなどの必要な物品を購入し、研究協力者とともに東京大学宇宙線研究所、中国科学院国家天文台、および現地においてデータ収集のためのソフトウェアの改良、データ収集の安定性試験と較正等をさらに進めた。
同時に、チベット空気シャワー観測装置で取得されているデータの解析やモンテカルロシミュレーション等を研究協力者とともに推進した。
また、南半球のボリビアで同様の観測を推進しているALPACA実験グループとの良好な協力関係を維持した。
研究の進捗状況と成果については、研究代表者および研究協力者が学術雑誌論文、各種国際会議、日本物理学会、日本天文学会などで発表した。
以上の通り、研究実施計画に沿って研究を進めることができた。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今後は、チベット空気シャワー観測装置の調整、較正を実施し。同時に、チベット空気シャワー観測装置で取得されているデータの解析をさらに進め、100 TeV 超領域ガンマ線天文学を確立につなげる。
