Outline of Research at the Start

太陽活動には、数百~数千年スケールの長期変動があり、数百年に1度、活動が数十年にわたって極端に弱くなるような現象が発生することが知られており、太陽活動極小期と呼ばれている。過去には、百年以上にわたって太陽活動の低下が継続した事象もあった。本研究では、樹木年輪等に含まれる宇宙線生成核種を高精度かつ高時間分解能で分析することにより、太陽活動の11年周期の変遷を精密に復元し、大規模な太陽活動極小期がどのようなプロセスによってもたらされるのかを明らかにすることを目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、樹木年輪中の炭素14濃度を1年分解能で超高精度で分析することで、太陽活動極小期の発生直前の11年周期の特性を明らかにし、特にその伸縮を具に明らかにすることで、太陽活動の長期的低下のメカニズムについて手掛かりを得ることを目的としている。精密な太陽活動サイクルの復元を行うため、トラバーチン堆積物中のベリリウム10濃度の分析も併せて進めている。また、発展的目標として、太陽活動極小期と大規模太陽フレアとの関連性について議論することも目指している。
2023年度は、2022年度に引き続き、過去1000年間において最大規模の太陽活動極小期であるシュペーラー極小期の開始時期前後の時代について、炭素14濃度の超高精度分析を進めた。分析試料としては、下北半島の猿ヶ森埋没林から採取されたアスナロの年輪を使用し、山形大学高感度加速器質量分析センターが所有するAMSを用いて重複測定を進めた。また、シュペーラー極小期の終わり頃からマウンダー極小期にかけてのベリリウム10の1年分解能データの取得が完了し、論文に発表した。トラバーチン堆積物の長期にわたる連続データの取得は世界で初めての事例である。アイスコアのベリリウム10や炭素14のデータと矛盾しない傾向が確認された。ベリリウム10のデータは、太陽圏内におけるドリフト効果により宇宙線の変動パターンがどのように変化するかを定量的に議論する上で必須となるデータであり、太陽サイクルのより正確な復元にも資するものである。また今後、未発見の大規模な太陽フレアを探索する第三のツールともなると期待される。

Reason

2022年度に発生したトラブルにより約5か月の遅れが生じていたが、2023年度はそのトラブルが解決し、2023年5月から2024年1月にかけて重点的に分析を進めた。2024年2月以降、加速器の安定性が下がったため、現在様子を見ながら慎重に分析を進めているところである。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

シュペーラー極小期の開始時時期についての分析を完了できるよう、加速器が安定し次第、慎重に分析を再開する。またトラバーチン堆積物のベリリウム10の分析も併せて行っていく。そのほか、紀元前9世紀の大規模な太陽活動極小期についての分析にも着手できるよう、試料の切削と化学洗浄を進めていく。
