Outline of Research at the Start

固体の表面付近で進行する化学反応において,表面近傍にどのような化学種がどれだけ存
在するかを,実際の反応に近い条件(大気圧,室温以上)でリアルタイム追跡し,定量的な反
応速度解析によって反応機構を明らかにする。そのために,化学種の識別能と定量性に優れ
る軟X線吸収スペクトルを,分光器を掃引することなく一度に測定できる「波長分散型軟X
線吸収分光法」において,ごく最近世界に先駆けて開発した蛍光検出に基づく測定手法を大
きく発展させ,大気圧下で0.1秒ごとのスペクトルの連続取得を実現する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

これまでに開発した軟X線領域の蛍光収量波長分散型X線吸収分光装置と電気化学セルを組み合わせた溶液系のリアルタイムオペランド測定装置を用いて,電気化学反応中の電極表面をリアルタイム観察した。特にCoOx電極においては,電位の掃引に伴い,酸素の吸収端に新たなピークが出現し,その強度が変化する様子を観察することに成功した。特徴的な変化を示す2本のピークのうち,531 eVに現れるピークは分子状酸素に帰属され,電位に対して線形の増加を示すことから,触媒反応とは直接関係ないものと推測される一方で,529 eVのピークは,酸素発生が始まる直前の電位において強度が増加し,電位を上げて酸素発生が進むとともに減少した。このような挙動は,観測されたピークが律速段階の反応中間体に帰属されると考えることで説明ができ,中間体の観測に成功したと考えられる。ピークの位置から,反応中間体は原子状の酸素であると推測している。また,Coの吸収端でも同様の測定を行い,酸素発生中の電極表面がほぼCo3O4であることや,電位の変化とともにCoが脱離・積層する様子を明らかにした。
一方,固気界面の反応観察においては,COMS検出器を用いて50 msごとの連続測定を実現し,10 Hzの偏光スイッチングと同期させて,大気によるCoの酸化過程を観察することに成功した。その結果,酸化の進行とともにCoの吸収端の吸収スペクトルの偏光依存性が変化していく様子をリアルタイムで観察することができた。

これまでに開発した軟X線領域の蛍光収量波長分散型X線吸収分光法を用いて,電極触媒の固液界面に対するリアルタイムオペランド測定に成功し,反応中間体を観測するとともに,固気界面の反応に対して偏光スイッチングと組み合わせた測定を行い,スペクトルの偏光依存性の変化を追跡するなど,着実に応用研究を推進したため。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

構築した反応観察システムを用いて,化学反応のリアルタイム観察による反応機構の解明を本格的に進める。具体的には,銀触媒によってエチレンからポリマーや殺菌剤,不凍液などの原料となるエチレンオキシドを合成する反応の機構を明らかにする。反応中に存在する2種類の酸素種(ElectrophilicおよびNucleophilic)のうち,前者はCarbonateと同定でき,これが活性種と推測されるが,現状で測定可能な0.001気圧程度では,Carbonateとエチレンから生成すると期待されるエチレンオキシドが観測できず,反応速度の解析も行えないために,活性種の決定に至っていない。そこで,より実際の反応条件に近い0.1気圧以上において,秒を切る時間分解能で反応を追跡する。さらに,XASの偏光依存性からCarbonateの配向を見積もることができるため,偏光スイッチングを利用して表面の化学種の配向をリアルタイムで追跡し,反応機構をより詳細に調べる。
また,固液界面における電気化学反応について,TiO2をベースとした水分解光触媒に着目し,電極電位および光照射の有無によるXASの違いを観測することで,光照射によって生じる反応中間体の観察を行うとともに,ピーク強度の変化を定量的に見積もり,反応速度論的な解析を行う。
