Outline of Research at the Start

2010年から継続するサンマの不漁は、一層深刻な問題となっている。サンマの資源変動を考える上で、最大のボトルネックは、回遊経路が特定できていない点にある。なぜ、2010年以降サンマの分布が沖合化し、その状態が維持されているのかという疑問に答えるためには個々のサンマの回遊経路を分析し、回遊特性を解明することが必要不可欠である。近年の観測によって明らかになった定在的な暖流Isoguchi Jetがサンマの回遊経路に非連続性を作り、サンマの分布沖合化が維持されているという作業仮説のもと、耳石の酸素安定同位体比を分析し、成長-回遊モデルと結合することで、サンマの回遊特性を精査し、仮説検証を実施する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

サンマ当歳魚のサンプルの全長、肉体長、体高、体幅、湿重量を測定し、これまで得られているデータに追加した。当歳魚と判断される23㎝以下の個体からサンプルをランダムに23個体(研究期間全体で85個体)抽出し、耳石日周輪解析を実施した。その結果123日齢から247日齢(研究期間全体で94日齢から227日齢)の範囲にあり、当歳魚であることを確認できた。マイクロミルを用いて耳石の日周輪30日ごと(縁辺部は30~50日)に耳石を切削し、耳石粉を回収し、微小領域安定同位体比分析システム(MICAL3c)にて酸素安定同位体比を分析した。全20個体について(研究期間全体で37個体)のデータを得ることができた。
今回得た20個体は、東経163度の比較的暖かい海域(暖水域)と東経167度の比較的冷水な海域(冷水域)で採集されたものであったため、採集地点間での比較を行った結果、成長が良い個体が冷水域に多いことが示された。耳石酸素安定同位体比は、暖水域の個体が過去にやや低水温を経験していることを示唆したが、地図上に分布可能海域を描画し比較すると、緯度的な分布の差は顕著ではなかった。回遊経路を特定するために、1個体ずつではあるが、眼球水晶体の炭素・窒素安定同位体比を測定した。眼球水晶体の同位体比と耳石の同位体比を併せて回遊経路推定を行ったところ、暖水域の個体は日付変更線に近い沖合から回遊しているのに対し、冷水域の個体は日本に近い黒潮続流域から回遊していることが示唆れた。以上の結果から、より西側に起源を持つ個体が成長が速く(餌料環境が良いことため)、より早い時期に餌料の多い北方の海域に回遊している可能性が示された。

理由
これまでに実施していた耳石酸素安定同位体比と同等以上のサンプルについて酸素安定同位体比を測定することができた。2022年度に示した日付変更線を跨ぐ東西の成長差が、より西側の海域でも確認できることを示し、さらに成長差が北方の海域への回遊に関連していることを示した。この知見は、すでにサンマの来遊予測で用いられている方法の科学的な根拠を与える内容となっており、来遊予測に直結する成果と考えられる。これらの実績から、順調に進展していると判断される。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

サンマの初期回遊特性を明らかにするために、継続して、
a) 過去に分析を行った耳石酸素安定同位体比のデータを用いて回遊経路の推定を行う。
b) 未成魚の採集を行い耳石の日周輪解析から成長履歴を推定する。
c) 耳石の日周輪30日程度ずつの耳石粉をマイクロミルで切削し、酸素安定同位体比を分析する。
d) 眼球水晶体の炭素・窒素安定同位体比分析を進め、サンマ成長-回遊モデル、酸素安定同位体比の情報を組み合わせて、サンマ初期生活史における回遊ルートを推定するためのモデル開発を進め、Isoguchi Jetによる回遊の変化を明らかにする。
