Outline of Research at the Start

海による南極氷床の底面融解過程は、海水準将来予測の中で早急に解明すべき大きな不確定要素と位置づけられている。この底面融解過程は、主に外洋からの暖水流入と沿岸での海氷生産に伴う低温の高密度水の挙動によって制御されているが、卓越する素過程には地域特性が存在する事が明らかになりつつあり、氷床-海氷-海洋システムにおける地域特性の解明が課題となる。本課題では、南極氷床総量の約9割が存在する東南極に着目し、東南極沿岸を特徴付ける4海域に着目した観測・数値モデル比較・統合研究を行う事により、地形的な条件や大気・海洋の気候的条件等の地域特性と氷床底面融解・海氷生産との関連性を明らかにする。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

トッテン氷河底面融解量と外洋からの熱供給との比較

沖合からトッテン氷河へと至る暖水の循環像を明らかにするため、豪州による観測を含む複数回の現場観測データと数値シミュレーションの結果を融合し解析した。その結果、大陸棚上へと流入した暖水が大陸棚上の深いお椀状の地形に沿って時計回りに循環し、その一部が氷河前面の局所的な深い海底峡谷(幅約10~20km、水深1000m以上)に沿って最終的にトッテン氷河の下へと流れ込んでいることが示された(沖合には複数の巨大な時計回りの定在海洋渦が存在し、暖水は渦の東側を中心に効率的に大陸棚方向へと輸送され、その後、お椀状の深い地形に沿って時計回りに循環し、一部が最終的にトッテン氷河へ運ばれる)。これにより、暖水流入を伴うトッテン氷河域の顕著な氷床の底面融解ー氷床海洋相互作用ーの実態が明らかになった。さらに、トッテン氷河の下へと流入する暖水の温度は一定ではなく、氷床融解を引き起こす海洋からの熱供給には大きな経年的な変動があることも明らかになった。この結果は、トッテン氷河周辺の氷床質量損失の包括的理解のみならず、温暖化が進行する現在から近未来における海面水位予測の精度向上にも資すると期待される。また、他の東南極沿岸域においても、同様の解析をする事により、さらなる精度向上を見込む事が期待される。

このように、交付申請書に記載した「研究の目的」及び「研究実施計画」について、上記のように直接的に研究目的に対して成果を上げる事となった。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今後は、前述の【トッテン氷河底面融解量と外洋からの熱供給との比較】と同様のデータ解析を、最新の観測データを用いて複数年にわたって継続実施し、複数年の知見を蓄積する。
