Outline of Research at the Start

高いエネルギー密度と可搬性を有するエネルギー化学物質（アンモニア、炭化水素、アルコール等）の新規な電解合成手法を実現するために、電極電位制御による新規な電極触媒反応場を構築し、高効率で小型かつ高速起動が可能な3次元型電気化学反応装置の開発による窒素および炭素の循環手法の確立を目的とする。すなわち、反応を加速化する分極反応場をイオン・電子輸送制御の観点から構築し、再生可能エネルギーの変動に対応した柔軟な操作性と高速製造能を有する低炭素・循環型社会の実現に資する次世代型の反応器システムの構築を行う。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

電気化学的促進効果を利用した電気化学反応装置の開発を目的として、3年目である令和5年度は、主にアンモニア電解合成に着目し、プロトン伝導性セラミック燃料電池（PCFC）の低温作動電解セルの作製を行った。スピンコートを用いて電極上に電解質薄膜を形成し、500℃以下でも安定に作動する低温作動電極支持型電解セルの作製を行った。電極支持型PCFCによる電解セルは、イットリウムドープセリア酸バリウムを電解質膜に用いて作製した。支持体であるカソード電極にはニッケルとイットリウムドープジルコン酸バリウムの混合体である多孔質電極を用いた。アノードには白金、あるいは鉄を用いた。特にアノードに鉄を用い窒素と水素の混合気体を導入した場合、400℃の低温作動条件下で印加電圧-1.25 Vにおいて1.1×10-8 mol s-1 cm-2の高いアンモニア生成速度が観測された。
以上は、アノードに水素を供給しプロトンをカソード側にポンピングする作動モードでの電解合成の検討だが、今年度はプロトンポンピングモードに加え、アノードに水蒸気を供給し、水蒸気電解モードにおけるアンモニア電解合成について取り組んだ。アノードにコバルト、鉄、イットリウムをジルコン酸バリウムにドープした混合伝導体に用い、カソードに鉄を用い窒素と水素の混合気体を導入した場合、600℃、-2.1Vでアンモニア生成が観測された。アンモニア生成速度は0.3×10-8 mol s-1 cm-2であり、この温度域では過去に報告例がない初めての観測結果である。
さらに、赤外分光法を用いた拡散反射法による電極触媒上の吸着種の振動スペクトルの観測を行った。窒素雰囲気、および窒素/水素雰囲気で観測を行い、1300～1000 cm－1で雰囲気に依存する吸着種由来のスペクトルが観測された。これらの観測を通じて、アンモニア電解合成システム設計にむけた知見が得られた。

Reason

電解セル設計のコンセプトを発展させ、低温域で作動する電極支持型電解セルを用いて400℃でアンモニア生成を観測し、アンモニア生成速度のセル構成と電位依存性について明らかにした。白金アノードと比較して、鉄アノードを用いた場合にプロトン流束の増加とカソード分極の効果がアンモニア生成速度向上の要因と考えられる。この成果は英文ジャーナルに公開され、電気化学的促進効果を利用した電極反応としてはこの温度域でトップレベルの反応速度が得られた。電極支持型電解セルはアンモニア電解合成だけでなく、二酸化炭素還元反応にも適用が可能であり、汎用性の高い技術を確立することができた。
また、電解質支持型の電解セルでは、600℃でアノードにおける水蒸気電解を行い、鉄系カソード電極に窒素/水素混合ガスを導入することでアンモニアが生成することを示した。上述したとおり、この温度域では前例のない成果であり、水と窒素からアンモニアを生成する技術として期待できる。この結果はセル内を流れるプロトンやホールなどの荷電粒子の輸率とも関連性を有すると考えられ、電解セルの輸送特性の観点から機構解明を進める。今年度はPCFCのイオン・電子輸送特性についても検討を進め、英文誌で出版した。また、輸送物性に関連して、PCFCの技術経済性分析も行った。今後、反応とイオン・電子輸送特性の融合的な研究を進める予定である。さらに、赤外分光法による拡散反射法を用いて、電圧を印可した状態で電極表面の吸着種を観測するその場測定装置を開発し、吸着種由来と考えられるスペクトルを観測することができた。他にも、二酸化炭素を触媒表面に補足し、水素と反応させることでメタン生成を観測している。この反応を電極に応用することが可能である。以上の一連の成果より、電極反応機構の解明とセル設計の両面から有用な成果が得られており、本研究課題は計画のとおり順調に進んでいる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

最終年度である令和6年度は、一室型反応器と二室型反応器の電解合成実験の知見を基に、カソードに窒素あるいは二酸化炭素を供給する際の電解質内の荷電粒子（プロトン、酸化物イオン、ホール、電子）の輸率と反応生成物であるアンモニアや炭化水素類の反応速度の相間について検討する。供給ガス（アノード：水蒸気、カソード：水素、および窒素または二酸化炭素）の分圧とアンモニア生成速度の関係についても明らかにし、アンモニアおよび炭化水素類の生成機構を解明する。また、二酸化炭素を電極触媒上に補足し、メタン化する技術を応用した電解セルの作製と電気化学測定も進める予定である。
さらに、水素リサイクル型電解合成システムの設計、およびエネルギー変換効率や目的生成物の製造能力の評価を実施する。二室型反応器ではアノードで水蒸気の電気分解が進行し、アノードに生成したプロトンがアノードからカソードに拡散し窒素あるいは二酸化炭素が反応する。カソードでは反応生成物であるアンモニアや炭化水素類の生成とともに水素が生成するため、水素リサイクル型システムの設計が必要である。従って、一室型反応器で観測した電気化学的促進効果と水蒸気電解を含む二室型反応器を組み合わせることで、これまでにないリサイクル型電解合成システムを提案する。また、提案するシステムのモデル解析を進め、反応速度、電流効率、および操作条件（温度、電位等）とエネルギー変換効率の相関について明らかにすることで、提案する新たな電解合成システムの実現可能性を示す。
