Outline of Research at the Start

生命・環境にとって最も重要でありながら、科学的には極めて複雑な研究対象である水溶液中の化学反応について、反応途上に起こる電子状態変化と原子の波束運動をリアルタイム観測し、その詳細を解明する。あらゆる分子をあらゆる電子状態からイオン化できる極端紫外レーザーを用い、10フェムト秒という極限的な時間分解能で反応途上の分子から電子を放出させ、反応の全過程を観測する。溶媒効果の本質を解明するために、気相・液相の反応を実験的に比較すると共に、最先端の理論研究と連携して溶液化学反応のダイナミクスを解明し、多様な分野に波及する基礎科学的学理を確立する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の申請書段階から、超高速光電子分光の時間分解能を極限に高めるために、チタンサファイアレーザーの出力パルスをマルチプレート法を用いて短パルス化し、高次高調波発生とフィラメンテーション四光波混合を行うことを計画し、努力を重ねてきた。本年度に、それがようやく完成し、極端紫外光と深紫外光発生の両者をsub-10 fsに極短パルス化することに成功した。これは、現時点で世界最高の時間分解能である。その結果、Pyrazineの内部転換における振動量子波束の明瞭な観測、エチレンやフランの高速内部転換の実時間観測などに成功した。また、これらの実験結果を解釈するために、量子化学計算とmultiple spawningによる振動波束運動のシミュレーションを行い、気相の非断熱反応の実験結果について理論計算との詳細な比較を実現し反応機構を明らかにした。溶液中の反応に関しては、例えば、Tetrabutylammonium iodide水溶液における水和電子の発生に関しては、気液界面に存在するイオンの濃度によって、電荷移動と水和電子発生の動力学が変化することを明らかにした。核酸塩基の超高速電子緩和過程については、溶液の超高速光電子分光によって非断熱電子緩和について知見を深めた上で、新たに時間分解赤外分光を適用しカルボニル基の伸縮振動領域の観測を進め、分子動力学計算との比較によって解釈を進めた。その結果、核酸塩基が従来議論されていなかったような新奇な中間体を形成する証拠が得られた。

特別推進研究申請時の計画について着実に前進して目標を達成すると共に、当該分野で世界をリードする研究を推進することに成功している。深紫外ー極端紫外の超高速光電子分光においては、世界最高の時間分解能である 11fsを達成し、有機分子の光化学反応においてかつて無い精緻な実験研究を実現した。さらに、本研究の柱である液体の超高速光電子分光は、順調に技術が確立すると共に、高繰り返しレーザーの採用や各種のパルス圧縮技術の採用によって、海外の研究グループを圧倒する成果が次々に上がっている。研究成果は、米国化学会誌などの高レベルなジャーナルに定期的に発表されている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

本研究における大きな発見は、核酸塩基の電子緩和過程において、今まで全く確認されていなかったねじれた中間体を同定したことにある。これによって、DNAの光損傷に関する従来の議論が塗り替えられる可能性があり、今後はオリゴマーに関する実験や更なる構造決定、理論計算との共同研究を集中的に研究を行っていく計画である。研究計画調書にも記載していなかった全く新しい挑戦は、光イオン化の量子干渉を利用したアト秒ダイナミクスの解明である。この方法では、高次高調波発生によって得られる極端紫外光を用いた光イオン化に、800 nmのドライビングレーザー光を用いた光吸収と誘導放出を組み合わせ、イオン化仮定における物質波の干渉を起こさせ、そのエネルギー依存性から光イオン化における電子散乱波の位相シフトを決定する。これまで、水に関する実験研究が1例報告されているのみであり、世界的にも殆ど研究例がない。我々は、液体の超高速光電子分光の開拓者であり、この機会にアト秒の動力学にも挑戦する意義は大きい。既に、量子干渉を起こさせるためのビームラインやアト秒の遅延時間を制御するリニアステージ、さらに、単一次数の高調波を用いた光電子スペクトル測定ができるような装置の準備が完了しており、研究の発展に期待が持たれる。
