Outline of Research at the Start

地球惑星科学において超高圧実験はアクセスが困難な地球惑星深部を理解するため決定的に重要な研究手法である。岡山大学惑星物質研究所(IPM)の高圧グループは、大容量川井型マルチアンビル装置(KMA)における圧力・温度発生において世界をリードし、超高圧下における粘弾性測定、熱電測定においても最先端の技術開発により下部マントル条件での実験を実現しつつある。これらの技術革新により、KMAの特徴を活かして超高圧高温下での融解実験、流動特性、核―マントル境界における熱物質輸送特性、酸化還元過程など多角的な研究を展開して、未解決のマントルの諸問題に取り組み地球のマントル進化の統合的モデルの創出に挑む。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

大容量川井型マルチアンビル装置(KMA)の最近の技術革新により、今まで困難であった圧力、温度での高圧実験を展開できるようになったことを背景に、KMAの特性を最大限に活かすことでマントルの未解決の諸問題に様々な角度から取り組む研究課題である。レイトベニア仮説の検証を行うため、マントルの強親鉄元素の高濃度異常の原因についてケイ酸塩メルトと鉄メルトとの間の強親鉄元素の分配実験の手法の確立を推進した。出発物質の強親鉄元素の濃度を低くすることで、コンドライト的なパターンとなり、これまでの研究で使用された高濃度の分配実験ではヘンリー則が成立していないことが指摘された。下部マントルに存在するとされる始原的リザーバーの起源を解明するために、ポストスピネル、AlやFeを含むブリッジマナイトの構成則、すべり系の決定を行なった。地球の始原物質とされるエンスタタイトコンドライトマントルの部分溶融実験を行った。部分溶融メルトの密度はブリッジマナイトより軽いがメージャライトより重いため、マントル遷移層底部に溜まることが示唆された。高圧融解実験によりブリッジマナイトと珪酸塩メルト間の鉄の2価と3価の分配を決定した。鉄の2価と3価の分別は無視できる程度であり、マグマオーシャンの結晶化中にブリッジマナイトに鉄の3価が優先的に取り込まれる可能性は低いため鉄の3価に富む下部マントルを説明する他のメカニズムが必要である。ブリッジマナイトの電気伝導度測定とメスバウアースペクトルのスピン状態の調査を行い、約20GPaで鉄の3価が低スピンになることが推測された。核―マントルの相互作用に関する研究では、含水ブリッジマナイトとFeSi合金と水による高温高圧化学反応実験を行い、下部マントル最下部の地震波異常と外核最上部の地震波異常を同時に説明する メカニズムを提唱した。

Reason

本年度は、強親鉄元素の分配の測定を京都大学の浅沼研究室のLA-ICPMSで大きな進展が見られた。レイトベニア仮説を検証するために高圧下での溶融鉄とケイ酸塩メルト間の強親鉄元素の分配実験で多くの問題がある。今までの実験では珪酸塩メルトの強親鉄元素はコンドライト的なパターンが得られていなかった。この問題は、今までの実験では微量な珪酸塩メルト中の強親鉄元素の測定を行うために、高濃度の強親鉄元素をドープしたことが原因としてヘンリー則が成立していなかった可能性があるため、低濃度をドープした実験を行なったところ、コンドライト的なパターンが得られた。始原的リザーバーの存在がBEAMSモデルで説明できるかを検証するため放射光施設SPring-8でその場観察高圧変形実験を行なった。柔らかいフェロペリクレースが連結しなくても下部マントルの岩石に少量のデーブマオアイトが存在すると岩石が柔らかくなる可能性が示された。核―マントルの相互作用に関する研究では、核―マントル境界における高温高圧化学反応実験で成果が得られたが、熱電輸送に関わる研究では担当していたポスドク1名が他大学の研究機関に異動したため、進展が少し遅れている。今年度から石井貴之氏が研究分担者に加わったことで、マルチアンビルの高圧技術を駆使した下部マントルにおける水の挙動や地震波不連続面について新しい知見を得ることができ、当初の計画を超える形で研究が進展した。これらを総合すると概ね順調に推移していると考えられる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

本研究課題の推進において、中間評価で遅れが指摘されたマルチアンビルの超高温高圧発生技術についてはボロンドープダイヤモンド(BDD)を用いた超高温発生が課題となっている。最近開発された超硬アンビルを用いることで、圧力は40GPaを超えることに成功しているが、BDDヒーターが2000Kを超えると不安定になる問題が発生している。令和5年度より石井貴之氏が惑星物質研究所に准教授として着任し、分担者として1年を経て環境に慣れたこともあり、本研究の中心的な課題である超高温超高圧発生の技術開発を行う。温度発生が不安定になる要因として電極材料の改良、周囲の材料の熱絶縁性を上げることで、温度領域の拡大を目指す。今後は40GPaを超える高圧下におけるBDDヒーターでの超高温発生セルの開発は放射光を用いたその場観察実験で行い、圧力マーカーを用いて正確に圧力を決定する。強親鉄元素の分配実験はセルの試料サイズが限られるため圧力マーカーを入れるスペースがないこと熱電対は高温で試料と反応するため、放射光実験で決定した荷重―圧力関係、温度―電力関係を用いて1000km程度の深いマグマオーシャンを想定した強親鉄元素の分配実験を行う。核―マントル境界における熱電輸送に関わる研究については、転出したポスドクが研究協力者として引き続き推進する。
