Outline of Research at the Start |
This research examines how gene and various environmental factors (e.g., culture, childhood experience) influence social support seeking. The findings will contribute to the understanding why people (particularly East Asians) are reluctant to seek social support to get through traumatic experience.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
First, a paper on ORPM1 polymorphisms and support-seeking, entitled “Mu opioid receptor gene (OPRM1) moderates the influence of perceived parental attention on social support seeking” was successfully published in Adaptive Human Behavior and Physiology last June. We found that only for those with OPRM1 GG genotype, perceived parental attention significantly promotes support seeking. Second, I completed the writing and oral defense of my doctoral dissertation (社会的支援の要請:文化や幼少時の経験による影響) and received my Ph.D.on September 27th. Third, I also completed all the work for Study 2 - Support Seeking of Chinese International Students in Japan and the U.S. We found that seeking support from people in one's home country may be detrimental to international students’ adjustment to the host culture, although it effectively helps them relive their feelings of loneliness. In addition, international students who have a high endorsement of their heritage culture were more likely to seek social support from people back in their home country. A paper based on these findings was published in Frontiers in Psychology in March of this year. Fourth, as a result of these achievements, I was awarded as an Excellent Doctor at Graduate School of Informatics at Nagoya University on March 27th.Finally,I wrote a manuscript regarding the mechanisms underlying empathic concern and soial support seeking.
