19世紀末から20世紀初頭に西欧の美術界を席巻した象徴主義は、1970年代の再評価以降、個別の芸術家に関する研究や各国の状況についての研究が進んだ。だがその結果として、象徴主義とは何かという点に関しては、「再現性よりも人間の内面に目を向ける傾向」といった漠然とした定義に拡大されてしまい、宗教画や歴史画、寓意画といった伝統的ジャンルとの区別が曖昧になってしまった。本研究では、ベルギーの画家フェルナン・クノップフ（1858-1921）の絵画作品を中心に、象徴主義絵画がイメージと意味の伝統的な対応システムをいかに利用・解体し、20世紀の美術の重要な淵源となったかを検証する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study analyzed the rhetorics of symbolist paintings by the Belgian painter Fernand Khnopff (1858-1921).
The main focus of Khnopff's symbolism has been on elucidating the meaning of his motifs, but most of these have not been based on clear evidence, and many of them have been interpreted differently among researchers. In particular, this study analyzed works such as "I lock my Door upon Myself", "Blue Wings", and "White, Black, and Gold", and revealed that Khnopff made efforts to avoid fixing the meaning of images, and instead intentionally tried to create allusions based on the correspondence between images.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
1880年代に始まる象徴主義の絵画については、その暗示性に関して、これまで主として様式面ではクロワゾニスムに代表される再現性からの離脱が、意味の面では芸術家独自の図像形成が、指摘されてきた。しかしフェルナン・クノップフの画面には、それにとどまらない画面上のイメージ相互の関係性による暗示的効果が認められた。これは、従来モティーフのソースとしてのみ関連性が認められ、技法面での関係性が希薄と考えられてきた象徴主義の文学運動、特に詩における暗示のレトリックとの類似として位置づけることができ、今後の文学及び美術における象徴主義研究に対して、新しい着眼点を提供するものといえる。
