Outline of Research at the Start |
The present research project explores the reception of chinoiserie in early modern literary texts. Having focused on oriental products in her previous JSPS grant for Early-Career Scientists, the researcher is at present keen to broaden her scope to encompass other objects and writers. The purpose of the current project is to reexamine the traditional male-female binary modality concerning chinoiserie, and the objective is to open doors for new interpretations of identity, not only in gender relations but also in East-West exchanges.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The researcher deems that the project is seeing steady progress. For the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic, she was able to travel internationally to conduct research and hold in-person meetings with other academics. In particular, she was able to disseminate the results of her research at an international conference for eighteenth-century history and literature in England in early 2023. The researcher also completed and submitted an article to a renowned scholarly journal.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The researcher is currently revising an article-length manuscript on oriental art in early modern English literature and theatre. Following the publication of two peer-reviewed articles on chinoiserie in early 2022, FY2022 was in many ways spent on preparation for and submission of abstracts and proposals, for events and publication schemes which are scheduled to materialize in FY2023 or later. For FY2023, the researcher already has two abstracts accepted for presentation at international conferences in North America.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The researcher’s proposal concerning women’s studies, colonialism, and art history has been accepted for inclusion in a multi-volume series by an English publishing press. The researcher envisages drafting an article-length manuscript during FY2023 and anticipates completion of submission in FY2024. She has also submitted an abstract to deliver a paper at a multinational conference, which will be held in association with her current affiliation and for which the researcher awaits a response.
