近代以降の文学作品が描き出す〈風景〉の構造や仕組みを分析する。言語による〈風景〉描写における最大のポイントは〈視点〉という概念とその言語化である。この概念には絵画における線遠近法、透視図法的な対象世界の見方、把握の仕方が深く反映されている。本研究は、近代的な視覚文化の一環として重要な言語表現における〈視点〉の問題を、歴史的に把握するため、印刷革命による言語の視覚化を歴史的に問い直す試みである。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project deals with the form and history of verbal landscape in literary works. In the first year, the "fixed viewpoint” was theoretically discussed, and in the second year, the theory of “perspectival view” was examined as one of the major influential factors in literary landscape as well as landscape painting. Since the latter part of the second year, another concept called “anti-prose” has been newly introduced into my discussion, and this project has been more focused upon the “anti-prose” theory in literary landscape, which is specifically based upon the idea of “homogeneous segmentation” (M. McLuhan) produced by “visualized language,” to which the printing revolution in early modern Europe had given a shape. At the end of the final year, a book of collected essays called "Write for the Ear: Toward the Anti-Prose Theory" was published for elucidating how the verbal landscape is deeply connected with modern prose style and the "scopic regime" in art.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究における第一の成果は、文学・言語における「風景」(landscape)という概念が、近代的な出来事であることの確認である。近代的と判断する根拠は、それが線遠近法に基礎づけられた絵画的概念に由来することにある。近代西欧における風景画の登場を基礎づけた遠近法、その文学への適用が「言語風景」(verbal landscape)である。第二の成果は、遠近法が活版印刷の進展とも密接な理論的・実践的関係を有していたという点で、遠近法と活版印刷との交点が近代散文の成立として明確化されたことである。その結果、風景画と言語風景の共通の基盤を「遠近法的なるもの」すなわち「視点」であると確認することができた。
