本研究では、英語に存在する、統語構造と意味構造の範疇ミスマッチ(categorial mismatch)を取り上げ、その現象が示す諸特性は、統語部門のみでの説明では真の説明とは言えず、その概念意味構造を参照することで正しく捉えることができるとの主張を行う。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research deals with a case of syntax-semantics mismatch, i.e. adverbial clause subject in English, then arguing that it is licensed not in narrow syntax but in the Conceptual Structure of Tripartite Parallel Structure.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
これまでの「学校文法」の世界では、副詞節が主語になることは記述されてもいなかった。しかし、本研究の成果として、「学校文法」が言語の構造的特性を活かした記述・説明としては不十分であることを立証した。
また、副詞節主語という、極めて周辺的事例の構造的・意味的特性を十分に考察することで、他の言語とは異なる、英語という個別言語の新しい特性が発見され、狭義の統語部門では扱うことはできず、三部門並列構造という、他の理論的枠組みが有効であることを実証した。
