Outline of Research at the Start |
This study investigates the current state and future interventions toward the development of pedagogical competencies of Japanese faculty teaching academic courses to international and domestic students using English-Medium Instruction (EMI). The study includes a series of in-depth quantitative and qualitative investigations involving the field’s three primary stakeholders: (1) Japanese university lecturers teaching in English; (2) international students in Japan; and (3) Japanese students taking courses in English.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The research is being conducted as planned. The first stage of data collection was complete in 2022. We published preliminary results in high IF journals. We also presented at several domestic and international conferences and symposia. We are currently preparing for the second (last) phase of data collection and analysis. In 2023/24 we will publish them and focus on disseminating the results at international conferences, practical webinars and teacher workshops.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
All activities are progressing smoothly. Reopening of Japan's borders after COVID-19 pandemic helped us resume our international activities and participate in research conferences.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2023/24 (last year of funding) we are planning to complete the final stage of data collection (1) observation of EMI classes in several American universities; (2) holding interviews with EMI lecturers outside Japan and/or Anglophone countries; (3) conduct survey among Japanese lecturers (a Delphi study stage). After that, we will spend time publishing and disseminating the results at international conferences.
