Outline of Research at the Start |
This project aims to produce, and make widely available, a phrasebank which will help develop L2 undergraduate students’ use of phrases in academic writing. The phrasebank will be comprised of approximately 250 empirically derived useful phrases presented with examples/explanations of use, and be targeted towards and organized in terms of a 5-paragraph essay.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2022, the process of further refining the phrasal items identified for inclusion through corpus interrogation in the initial stages continued, with instructor ratings applied to each of the items. Items remaining after analysis of the ratings comprised the content of the phrasebank.
As a means of presenting the remaining phrasal items in an accessible and useful manner, they were categorized and presented according to function. An example of each item, showing it in context and drawn from the EAP student corpus, was also provided. The phrasebank was then printed and distributed to all students during the EAP IV course in the latter half of the academic year.
